Healthy eating – what’s it all about! 11th November 2016

Whoever thought food could have become so complicated? And as for healthy eating, that’s a whole different story.
At Meal Genie, we want to help you work through the minefield that is healthy eating by making things simple for you:

There is no such thing as good or bad foods. Have you ever seen a courgette in the naughty corner? Eh…no.
Food is food! Some food we eat because we want to feel like the world’s most virtuous healthy eating yogi….others we eat because we just broke up with our other half and want to hide from the world in a tub of Ben & Jerry’s.
In reality, food is all on a scale. That scale relates to nutrient density. So the next time you sit down to eat something, think of it in those terms. Do you have good quality protein, fat and carbohydrate in front of you? Is it unprocessed? Do you have a really nice colourful plate packed full of nutrients? Hopefully this is the case about 90% of the time.
Health should be viewed holistically. Health is all encompassing. It doesn’t just involve healthy eating. Your optimum health involves having a varied, well-balanced diet, a good sleeping regime, regular exercise and a stress management programme. You can’t achieve optimum health without addressing all of these areas and in my experience, managing stress is the major element of achieving optimum health. Food shouldn’t add to your stress.
Cooking should be fun. Let’s be honest…it’s difficult to get excited about eating spaghetti Bolognese for the fourth week in a row. Our busy routines mean that cooking has shifted far down the lists of things to do and enjoy. You finish work, go to supermarket, amble around and buy 10 things you didn’t need, come home and ponder what you were thinking when you bought a potato and a can of beans (?!), order takeaway and spend the night self loathing while watching Netflix. Sound familiar? I honestly believe the time you spend cooking can be better used unwinding from your day and catching up and spending time with your loved ones. Along with learning about nutrition, new ingredients, cuisines and cooking techniques.
There is no such thing as a superfood. All foods have different nutrient profiles. In reality, there is so much research and literature on foods these days that if you were to investigate every single one of them you would probably find a lot of conflicting information. For that reason, having a balanced varied diet is the best way to go.
These are just some of the reasons we think Meal Genie can help you. With our busy lifestyles it’s so difficult to fuel our bodies properly. One of our main aims is to empower our customers to learn about food so you will know that healthy eating doesn’t need to be complicated.
